Router Management

This tutorial will show you how to configure the Linksys router’s management settings. This includes configuring router access, management through SNMP, UPnP feature, IGMP-Proxy feature, and management via WLAN. This article is designed for CCNA students, network engineers, and anyone looking to Linksys router management. This article falls under the CCNA syllabus’s objective “Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN”.

The Linksys router’s web-based interface allows you to:

  • Change the username and the password of the router’s administrator account.
  • Configure the router’s remote access.
  • Enable Microsoft Windows to automatically configure the Linksys router for various purposes, such as connecting and disconnecting the router from the Internet, play online, talk online,…
  • Upgrade the router’s firmware remotely.
  • Manage the router through SNMP.
  • Manage the router from a wireless device.
  • Enhance Multicasting for your wireless devices.

To start configuring the router’s management settings, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open your favorite web browser application, and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address field. Then press Enter.

Step 2: In the authentication dialog box, enter the administrator’s username and password. The default values are admin/admin for the username/password.

However, on some Linksys router platforms, the default value for the username is the blank and for the password is admin.

Step 3: Click Administration.

Step 4: Enter the administrator’s username in the Gateway Username text box.

Step 5: Enter the administrator’s password in the Gateway Password text box.

Step 6: In the Remote Gateway Access area:

  • Click Enable in order to be able to configure the router remotely.
  • Enter a number greater than 1024 and lower than 65535 in Management Port text box. For example, if you have entered a value of 2022 and the router’s public IP address is 74.23.21.152, then you must enter the URL http://74.23.21.152:2022 in order to open the router’s web-based interface.
  • In the Allowed IP drop-down menu, choose whether you want to configure the router from any computer, from a computer with a specific IP address, or from a couple of computers within a range of IP addresses.

Step 7: In the Remote Upgrade area, click Enable if you want to upgrade the router’s firmware remotely. If not, click Disable.

Step 8: In the SNMP area:

  • Click Enable so that you can manage the router through SNMP.
  • In the Allowed IP drop-down menu, choose whether you want to manage the router from any computer, from a computer with a specific IP address, or from a couple of computers within a range of IP addresses.
  • Enter a name for your router.
  • In the Get Community text box, enter the password the SNMP workstation should use to read the router configuration.
  • In the Set Community text box, Enter the password the SNMP workstation should use to modify the router configuration.
  • In the Trap to field, enter the IP address of the SNMP workstation that will receive the router’s traps. A trap is a message sent to the SNMP workstation upon a router’s event (Internet connection down/up, blocking unauthorized user…).

Step 9: In the UPnP section, click Enable in order to allow the Plug and Play feature. Otherwise, click Disable.

Step 10: In the IGMP-Proxy section, click Enable in order to allow multicasting for your wireless devices. Otherwise, click Disable.

Step 11: In the WLAN section, click enable in order to allow router’s management from a wireless computer. Otherwise, click Disable.
